Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out the frequency and the most dominant factor of Indonesian grammatical and lexical interference found in the learners’ communicative competence in written communication via whatsapp learning group. This research was designed by using qualitative approach with content analysis method. The subjects of this research were the fourth-semester students of TBI class A-E at IAIN Bengkulu who enrolled semantics-pragmatics class through whatsapp learning group in academic year 2020/2021. The subjects were chosen randomly from each class. The result of this research showed that there were two types of L1 interference: lexical interference and grammatical interference. 133 frequencies of lexical interference were found including misusing preposition with 24 frequencies or 18, 04 %, word choice with 23 frequencies or 17, 29 %, omitting article with 82 frequencies or 61, 65 %, and misusing article with 4 frequencies or 3, 00 %. Meanwhile, 193 frequencies of grammatical interference were found including subject-verb agreement with 28 frequencies or 14, 50 %, number and quantifier with 13 frequencies or 6, 73 %, to infinitive with 8 frequencies or 4, 14 %, word for word translation with 12 frequencies or 6, 21 %, passive voice with 27 frequencies or 13, 98 %, tenses with 82 frequencies or 42, 48 %, disordering words with 11 frequencies or 5, 69 %, and modal with 12 frequencies or 6, 21 %. The most dominant factor causing LI interference at lexical level was interlingual factor with 112 frequencies or 84, 21 %, and the most dominant factor of LI interference at grammatical level was transfer of stucture with 98 frequencies or 50, 77 %.
