Abstract

Tita Asmara, SRN.1811230002, 2022. THE FACTORS CAUSING FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY (FLA) IN ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILL ( A Case Study at Fifth Semester Students of Perbankan Syariah UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu). Advisor I : Dr. H. Ali Akbarjono, M.Pd Advisor II : Reko Serasi, M.A. This research is intended to know the level of students’ anxiety and identify possible factors to contribute the anxiety in an English speaking skill. The writer took at fifth semester students of perbankan syariah in UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu in academic year 2021/2022. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with case study approach. The writer use two kinds of instruments to collect the data. The first instrument is Foreign Language Anxiety Scale questionnaire, developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). It consists of 33 items with 5 point Likert-Scale. The second instrument is the semi-structured interview. The results of this research show that from psychological aspect more than half of students (58%) are in the level of moderate anxiety, 6 students (24%) are in the level of severe anxiety, and 6 (24%) are in the level of mild anxiety. This research also showed the result of interviews xiii namely, speaking in front of the class, being laughed at by others, incomprehensible input, students’ beliefs about language learning, teacher personality, and lack of preparation were the six factors that may contribute to the students anxiety in learning English from ten anxious students were selected as the participants.
